The illustrations on this page are taken from the 1780 book Essai de la Musique Ancienne et Moderne, by Jean-Benjamin de La Borde. The above picture shows three different sizes of sheng (La Borde uses the spelling "cheng", common in older French texts) and the picture below shows a sheng player in action. Notice the longer "spout-style" mouthpieces that were commonly found on sheng of that time, rather than the short mouthpieces currently more common.
